Add a Favicon or Site Icon

What is a Favicon?

A Favicon is the tiny graphic that appears on the tabs of your web browser – a small image that helps to identify the website.

It’s not essential to the running of your site but at just 4kb or so, it won’t slow you down and it adds that little bit of extra professionalism to your branding. So yes we’d recommend it.

Where to find the setting

From your WordPress Dashboard, go to Appearance/Customise and click on the Site Identity option. Scroll down to “Site Icon”; this the favicon setting.

“Site Icons are what you see in browser tabs, bookmark bars, and within the WordPress mobile apps. Upload one here!”

Upload your image where prompted, click publish and close the customiser and your icon should be there.

Get the Image right

Site icons/Favicons should be square and at least 512 × 512 pixels. Our advice is to make it this size and save it as a png (or gif). You may need to tweak your own logo, ideally with the photo manipulation software of your choice.

Struggling? It might be your theme

If the setting for the site icon isn’t under the customiser, the likely reason is that your theme settings override the default WordPress settings. You’ll therefore need to look under your theme’s settings in the dashboard (they’re different for each different theme) or refer to your theme’s documentation to help find it. If it still won’t work, your next point of call would be to your theme’s developer support.

Upload it manually

If problems persist you may need to upload it manually. Go to your hosting control panel and locate the file manager icon. Double click to open. Go to public_html/wp-content/themes and upload your “favicon” image to your theme’s folder. Make sure it’s a png and it’s the right size.

Keep in mind that if you change your theme in the future, you’ll need to upload the favicon to that theme’s folder too.
